Tsuut’ina Nation, AB — The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service (TNPS) would like to provide information regarding an incident on March 28, 2026, involving an officer and an unrestrained dog on Tsuut’ina Nation.
At approximately 3:00 p.m., an officer responded to a call for service regarding a suspicious person. Upon arrival, the officer was approached by a large, unrestrained white dog that initially appeared friendly.
While attempting to locate the residents of the home, the officer found an unresponsive individual in the front yard. As the officer began providing assistance, the dog’s behaviour changed and it became aggressive, lunging toward the officer and the individual.
The officer made multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation and move away from the animal. Despite these efforts, the dog continued to advance and attempted to bite, creating an immediate risk to the officer’s safety.
As a last resort, the officer discharged their firearm, injuring the dog.
The officer secured the scene and arranged for the dog to be transported to a veterinary clinic, where it is currently receiving care. The dog’s owner has been notified.
This incident was captured on a body-worn camera and is currently under review, as is standard procedure. We are committed to transparency and the well-being of our community and their animals.
TNPS recognizes that incidents involving animals can be distressing. Officers are trained to use de-escalation whenever possible and to consider all available options before using force.
